Advanced Creative Photography - September 2022

On this course we are looking to push our knowledge of photography beyond the basics.

For this term we are going to cover 3 of the following subjects, to be decided on our first class.

  • Macro Photography - using specialist lenses and lens adaptors.

  • Landscape Photography - from the City to the Sea and everything in between.

  • Still Life Photography - utilising available light and light modifiers.

  • Environmental Portraiture - photographing people in their environment e.g. people working on an allotment.

  • Flash Photography - using off camera flash to complement available light or to overpower it.

  • Night Time/Light Painting - using long exposures and/or light painting tools to record things the eye would never see.

  • Long Exposure Photography - using Neutral Density Filters to extend the time to record an image.

The 3 subjects will be covered over 3 weeks, broken down into 2 practical sessions either at studio or on location, if Landscape based, and 1 zoom sessions (covid/travel restrictions permitting). You as a group might decide to combine some of these topics.

The Zoom sessions will give us the opportunity to

  • review the images taken, offering advice both on composition and post processing.

  • discuss the project you are working on

  • discuss the work of an accomplished photography, not necessarily the obvious ones

As with all types of photography many of the things you learn will overlap with others e.g. Focus Stacking is relevant to both Macro/Still Life and Landscape Photography. Flash has it’s place in both Portraiture and Macro/Still Life Photography

We will examine what constitutes a body of work and select a project which will form the backbone of the course for you, not all projects will be the same.

You will be encouraged to find photographers or styles of photography that you like and try to emulate them, this is how I started to learn photography and eventually found my own style.

As my background is in Film Photography I don’t consider an image finished until you are holding it in your hand so I will spend time discussing why we need to print more of our images. As a student on this course I offer discounted printing, you will receive more details during the course.

Advanced Creative Photography - 10 week course Sept 2022
£200.00

This course is for photographers wanting to push their photography up a gear.

A basic understanding of how your camera works is assumed but you don’t need to know everything, I don’t profess to know everything.

On this course you will be encouraged to work on a project culminating in either a set of prints, a book or website/slideshow. You will be tasked with thinking more about the why of your photography than the how. This is not to say that it won’t be fun.

You will be expected to offer feedback to your fellow attendees on the work they are producing, remembering at all times to be civil and for everyone to remember that it is only your/my opinion and it is not necessarily right.
